At the end of March, volunteers started seedlings in the EcoHouse solarium (room with lots of windows and a glass roof). Starting seedlings’ means the seeds are planted inside in small pots to germinate. Some vegetables are started inside and then planted outdoors when the weather becomes warmer. There are three main reasons for this:
The main pollution problem in our ocean is plastic …. It’s is everywhere! The minimum time required for the plastic to degrade is 955 years which makes it stay in oceans for a very long time. Thousands of animals end up mistaking plastic for food or the animals get tangled in it for rest of their life. When animals mistake the plastic for food and consume it, it leads to slow death caused either by the instant damage to their guts or the long term damage by taking up the volume of their stomach leading to the starvation of the animal. About 65% of the seabirds have eaten plastic particles, about 67,555 to 79,555 tons of plastic is ingested by the North Pacific fish, and 57% of sea turtles worldwide have eaten plastic.

The first SSG workshop focused on self-watering containers and how to build them. Self-watering containers are an inexpensive way to grow a lot of plants with minimal care. These containers have an area at the base that can be filled with water. Over time, a 8766 wick 8767 (something absorbant) pulls the water into the soil to keep the plants watered. Larger containers can be made out of plastic totes or buckets and smaller ones can be made from 7L pop bottles or kitty litter pails. The practical part of the workshop focused on building self-watering containers out of pop bottles cut in half, stacked and filled with soil and herbs. In larger con
In urbanized environments most to all of the historical landscapes have been paved over. Rain flows quickly over impervious surfaces such as rooftops, driveways and parking lots. Rather than entering the soil the water is redirected to nearby storm drains. This water picks up pollutants along the way such as road salts, fertilizers and motor oil. These pollutants enter storm drains and are conveyed quickly to our streams and Hamilton Harbour.

There are many products on the shelves that will claim they are safe for your pets, but don’t be fooled. Just because they are safe for your pets’ paws, does NOT mean they are safe for your pets to eat. Read the label carefully, and make sure you understand the ingredients.
If there’s a fire burning in the fireplace, lower the thermostat to conserve energy (and save on your heating bill). You definitely can lower the temperature if you’re throwing a party — the body heat will more than make up for it. As a matter of fact, try to keep your thermostat at 75 degrees Celsius throughout the winter you will see a huge difference in your energy bill.
